2001 was the year that the world was introduced to the fictional, angry ogre, Shrek.
The word ‘Shrek’ is derived from ‘Schrek’, the German word for ‘fright’ or ‘terror’.
Loved by adults and children alike, Shrek is an animated film featuring adult-oriented humour whilst appealing to children at the same time. The award-winning film is loosely based on a 1990 fairy tale book of the same name by author William Steig. In 1991, American film director, producer and screenwriter Steven Spielberg purchased the rights to the book with the intention of producing a traditionally animated film. He was convinced to take the film to the newly founded DreamWorks Animation in 1994 and following the studio’s purchase of the rights, the development of the film began in 1995.
The success of Shrek helped to establish DreamWorks Animation as a major competitor to Pixar in feature film animation. It is now recognised across the world for its quality family entertainment. Shrek received numerous award nominations and awards, including Best Adapted Screenplay from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
Such was the popularity of the film, it has been followed by three sequels – Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek The Third (2007) and Shrek Forever After (2010), as well as two holiday specials, a spin off film (Puss in Boots, 2011) and even a stage musical.
Starring Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow, Shrek parodies other fairy tale adaptations. Shrek (Myers) lives in a swamp which becomes overrun with fairy tale creatures who have been banished there by Lord Farquaad (Lithgow), who wants to become King. Shrek makes a deal with Farquaad to rescue Princess Fiona (Diaz), whom he wants to marry, in return for Shrek regaining his swamp. With the help of Donkey (Murphy), Shrek begins his quest but falls in love with Princess Fiona along the way, who is hiding a secret that changes both of their lives forever.
